A home softener is sized around a family of four and a morning rush that lasts twenty minutes. A salon, a restaurant or a dental office is a different animal. The demand is higher, it lands in tight windows, and it repeats all day. Size a commercial system off average daily use and it falls behind exactly when the place is full, which is the one time anyone notices the water.
So we size to peak demand instead. How many fixtures might run at once on your busiest afternoon, how fast the incoming line can actually deliver, and how many hours a day the system has to keep up without stopping to regenerate. Get those three right and the water stays soft through the rush. Get them wrong and you are back to spotted glassware and scaled up equipment inside a year.
The water is the same, the load is not
Boise, Meridian and Nampa city water typically runs 8 to 15 grains per gallon, and it is not considered soft until it drops under about 3 grains. That is the same water your house gets. The difference at a business is volume and duty cycle. A dish machine cycling every few minutes, an autoclave, a row of salon backwash bowls or a coffee line pulling all day moves far more water through the same hard supply, so scale builds faster and shows up sooner on the equipment you paid the most for.

A softener exchanges hardness minerals and nothing else.
