Filters do not fail on a neat annual schedule. Carbon quits without warning while it still looks clean, and sediment cartridges channel once they load up. We set your change intervals against the water at your address, then swap the elements, sanitize the housings and confirm the system is producing before we pack up.

A filter can fail two ways,
and only one of them is obvious
Every filter in your house is a consumable with a job that ends. The trouble is that the two main types end their working life in opposite ways, and the one that matters most gives you no warning at all. If you wait for the water to tell you something is wrong, you have already been drinking or showering through a filter that stopped working weeks earlier.
Carbon stops adsorbing and says nothing
Carbon is the sneaky one. It does not clog, it does not slow the flow, and it does not change color. It just quietly runs out of surface for chlorine and taste to grab onto, and once it does the chlorine walks through the housing as if it were empty. On Boise, Meridian and Nampa city supply, which is chlorinated or chloraminated, that carbon is working every single day, so it wears from the volume you pull, not from the date on the sticker. The first sign most people notice is the chlorine taste coming back at the kitchen tap, and by then the filter has been passing it through for a while.
Sediment cartridges channel once they load
Sediment cartridges fail the opposite way. They load up with grit and iron fines, pressure drops across the loaded face, and the water finds the path of least resistance. Instead of passing through the packed material it channels around it, so you get worse filtration and a weaker shower at the same time. A well carrying fines eats these cartridges far faster than clean city supply does, which is exactly why a single calendar cannot cover every house.

A change schedule that ignores your water is a guess. Two homes a mile apart can run the same hardware on completely different intervals, because one is on city supply and the other pulls from a well loaded with iron and sand. We read your water quality results and how much the household actually draws, then we date every housing we open so the next change lands before the taste or the pressure drop does.

What a filter change looks like
when it is done properly
Swapping a cartridge is not just pulling one element out and dropping another in. A housing that has held water for a year has a film inside it, the O-rings dry out, and a reverse osmosis system needs its output checked against a number, not a hunch. We treat the whole visit as a small service, so the system you had before the change is the system you keep after it.
Reverse osmosis at the drinking tap
Under-sink reverse osmosis usually runs a sediment pre-filter, one or two carbon stages, the membrane itself and a final polish before the faucet. Each stage protects the one behind it, so a neglected pre-filter shortens the membrane, which is the expensive part. We change the pre-filters and carbon on their own schedule, keep the membrane on a longer one, sanitize the housings and the tank, then confirm the output before we leave rather than assuming the new parts fixed it.
Whole-home cartridges and backwashing media
Whole-house filtration carries bigger cartridges and, in some builds, a backwashing carbon or sediment tank that rinses itself instead of holding a replaceable element. Either way the failure modes are the same: carbon that has quietly stopped working, or sediment media that has loaded and started to channel. We check the pressure across the filter, swap what is spent, sanitize the housings, and read the water at a tap so soft, clean water going in means the same coming out the far side.

We set your intervals off real water numbers, keep the cartridges on the truck so most changes happen the same visit, and confirm the system is producing before we drive away.
