Every build starts from
three real inputs
There is no standard house, so there is no standard system. Before we quote anything, three things have to be settled: what your water is actually carrying, how many people live there and how they use it, and how the pipes are laid out. Get any one of those wrong and the equipment underperforms while running exactly as designed.
One, what the test found
The free test is where design begins. Hardness in grains per gallon sets the softener capacity, but it is rarely the only number that matters. Iron will blind a resin bed if it isn't handled ahead of the softener. Chlorine or chloramine on city supply chews through seals and flattens the taste of everything it touches. On a well, nitrate, arsenic or uranium may be sitting there with no taste and no smell, and none of those are a softener's job. We read the whole panel, not one strip.
Two, the household
Capacity is spent by use, so people and habits drive the design as much as the grain count does. A four bathroom place in Star with two teenagers moves far more water than a couple in a two bath ranch, and a home with a jetted tub or a high flow shower has peaks the equipment has to keep up with. We size for the busy weekday morning, not the quiet average, because a system that holds up at 7am holds up the rest of the week too.
Three, the plumbing
Then we look at how water actually runs through the house. Where the main comes in, whether a softener loop was roughed in and where it ties to the line, whether the hose bibs and the irrigation should sit on raw water so nobody pays to soften a lawn. On more than one Meridian build we have found a loop plumbed onto the wrong branch, softening the grass and nothing indoors. The layout decides where the treated line begins and what stays untreated, and that plan gets drawn before a single fitting is cut.

Grains, people and peak flow,
not the bathroom count
A carton in a big-box aisle sizes a softener by bedroom or bathroom count, which is a rough stand-in for the two numbers that actually decide the build. One is how many grains of hardness the system has to remove between regenerations. The other is how much water it has to pass at once without dropping pressure. We work both out directly. Daily use multiplied by your hardness gives the grain load the resin has to handle, and the fixtures likely to run together at peak set the service flow the valve has to carry. Then we choose a resin volume and a control valve that meet both with margin, so the unit is neither regenerating every night nor gasping during a morning rush.

Why we build on Hague,
and why that matters in year five
We are an authorized dealer for Hague Quality Water, part of the A.O. Smith family. The equipment is patented and made in the USA. That is less a badge than a practical decision. When a part is needed four years from now, it exists and we can get it, and the crew servicing it is the same crew that sized and fitted it. A softener bought off a shelf and self installed answers to a returns counter, if the receipt still turns up.
The difference is where the thinking happens
An off the shelf unit makes every sizing decision for you at the factory, printed on the carton, before anyone has seen your water. Capacity becomes a guess from the bathroom count. Iron and sediment go unhandled until the resin fouls and nobody knows why the soft water went hard again. Regeneration runs on a timer whether the water needs it or not, burning salt for nothing. We set each of those to your water instead: capacity to your grain load, pre-treatment to what the test found, regeneration to your actual use rather than a fixed clock.

If the budget is the obstacle, rent it
We run a rental program for exactly this. Same equipment, same install standard, spread out instead of paid up front. Budget has never been a good reason to keep showering in water we both know is bad, and we would rather rent you the system that fits than sell you a smaller one that doesn't. The design does not shrink to meet the money. The payment does.

Sized on paper, then proven
at the tap before we go
A design is only a promise until the water proves it. Once the system is in, we bring pressure back slowly, watch every joint we touched, and test at a fixture. Soft in, soft out, or we are not finished. If the numbers at the tap don't match the numbers on paper, the install isn't done, and we would rather find that on your driveway than on a phone call three weeks later.
That is also why we test broadly at the start. A system sized off a single reading, running perfectly, on water it was never designed for, is the most common second opinion we get called out to. The way to avoid it is to measure everything up front and design against all of it, not just the one number that sells easily.
Idaho came into 2026 off one of the warmest winters since records began in 1896, with snowpack at or near record lows. Less water moving through the ground means less dilution of what is already down there, and this is one of the fastest growing regions in the country besides.
